This is how compelling this story is: I don’t know if I can finish reading it, because I care so very very much about what’s happening to the protagonist and the current main supporting character, and right now is very dark & scary part of the plot. Something is very probably going to go wrong soon, and it’s going to hurt me so much to read it, I’m not sure I want to.
But I will anyway.
This is a modern day fiction about a runaway teen girl who most often goes by the name Hazel. It’s sooooo not my usual cup of scifi/fantasy-tea, but it’s thrilling me anyway. It’s professional quality writing, a main character who you ache for, and a roller-coaster story.
The beginning wasn’t quite as thrilling, because we don’t know anything about Hazel’s back ground as she begins her runaway journey. All we have is a 14 year old girl, immature in the "young" sense rather than "crude", leaving home. Because she’s an intelligent teen, her word choices come off as purple prose-y at times. At first I thought this was due to the writing, but as I became more familiar with the character and the writing style, I realized it was a fitting part of Hazel being a young, reasonably well-read teenager.
The story is well-written and interesting enough that it kept me going despite my initial hesitation, but hen several chapters in we find out about the terrible bruise still fading from Hazel’s face a week after she ran away. From there on in, I was totally, completely hooked.
Please, go read this. Just be prepared to set aside several hours, because you will end up reading the entire archives in one go.
