Diary of a Heretic by Kathleen Maher

Pure Fiction

My online fiction blog opens with an episode of my novel, novella, or short story in progress.

The categories listed on the far right sidebar are completed works of fiction. Some I’ve rewritten and others are waiting to be rewritten.

Also listed on the sidebar are links to my flash fiction—stories in fewer than 500 words.

My writing doesn’t belong to a specific genre.

Note: Diary of a Heretic contains some graphic sexual content, graphic violence, and harsh language.

Something missing…

I don’t think there’s any question if Kathleen Maher is an excellent writer because, not to put too fine a point on it, she is.  Her writing is clear, sharp, and engaging.

But the plot, I don’t know.  Perhaps it’s because it seems to be highly spiritual in nature as the main character says, "Everyone needs to know and say why they’re alive."  I usually prefer stories other than what this can provide, and that is nobody’s fault but my own.  So if stories like this is your cup of tea, then I highly recommend you take a look because Maher’s writing is definitely worth it.

This is one of my favorite sites on the web. The writing is of astonishingly high quality, and the stories are always entertaining—sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic, and often quite sexy, without veering into "erotica." In fact, they are hard to classify, as they don’t fit into any genre, except, perhaps, literary fiction.  Which, to me, is the best kind. As [more . . .]

Kathleen Maher is a gifted fiction writer. The stories are unusual but always compelling and her characters are three-dimensional. She calls her blog posts "work in progress" but they are better than a lot of stuff I read. I highly recommend Diary of a Heretic

I’ve recently been reading John Cheever’s short stories, and there’s a hint of Cheever’s technique here – summing up people’s characters very quickly, plunging us into the middle of their dramas, and sometimes guiding us very rapidly through events which cover several years. The rapidity of the dialogue and action can be quite exhilarating at times. There’s also that sense [more . . .]
