DEAD BOYFRIEND

Dead Boyfriend: much enjoyed; happy to recommend

I decided to give Dead Boyfriend a try based on a chapter the author wrote for another serial web story: Tales of MU. Writing someone else’s characters is never easy, but this author had a light, deft touch that left me delighted with the short, clever story he’d written for ToMU.

I was even more pleased with Dead Boyfriend, I’m happy to say. The protagonist is clever, witty, and good at what he does—and yet he still has some depth and pathos, neatly avoiding the MarySue problem. The dialogue is crisp and flows smoothly. The occasional humor arises naturally out of the story’s circumstances, the sex scenes curl your toes delightfully, and the monsters are truly horrific.

Currently my only quibble with the story is that I want more, and faster (ahem, no innuendo intended)! The most recent cliffhanger was a doozie, and knowing I’d have to wait until the next Monday for a conclusion had me ready to pull my hair.
