Erick’s Journey by Zoe E. Whitten

Sometimes, the cost of knowledge is lost innocence...

Running from the law, a young daoine sidhe (black elf) takes refuge in a tavern, only to discover that his drinking partner for the night is also wanted in the same kingdom.  After failing an escape attempt, Erick is escorted to see King Finrod along with the mountainous half-orc Luther.

They are both charged with the task of hunting down and collaring a group of werekin children who have invaded the neighboring orc territories.  The task would be hard enough without complications, but the hunting party must also deal with the interest of an ancient wyrm, Prom Orvest Dimitri.  Dimitri offers to train Erick in shadow magic, and, eager for a way to learn without studying, Erick agrees.  These lessons come with a cost, one that even Dimitri himself had not anticipate or intended.

When an orc war chief’s son is wounded and cursed with druid magic, the hunting party is pressed into service to hunt down and murder the orc before it can transform and wreck the balance of nature in Lissand.

Cold-blooded murder doesn’t sit well with Erick, and as his comrades harden their hearts, he begins searching desperately for an alternative.  Set against his allies, Erick does the unthinkable and sets out on his own.  But his righteous convictions may lead him instead down a path into darkness, and farther into the influence of Dimitri.

Part of the Mystical World Wars series, Erick’s Journey represent one of many entry points into the story.  It introduces readers to Lissand and many of the mystical races living in the dimension of the elves.

Editor’s First Impression

The first chapter is solid and it introduces the standard fantasy elements: elves, orcs, dwarves, taverns and tankards of ale.  There’s already a touch of dark humour and more than a hint of adventure to come.

Take the Mystery Tour

I missed out on the blurb before clicking through to read Erick’s Journey and so I set off on my own adventure through Zoe E. Whitten’s story with no idea what to expect.  By the end of part one, I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen, and then I was pleasantly surprised with the unexpected twists and turns the plot took.

There is a lot to like about this dark fantasy story and I think that for me, one of the main attractions was that 99% of the world of Lissand was familiar. There are Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Sidhe etc. We have all been introduced to them before, we know wherever they are there will be magic, swords, tree houses and inns.

Then there is that extra 1%, that little undefined something which shakes the imagination and takes the reader into new territory. It’s here, tantalising glimpses reveal themselves throughout and they were frequent enough to leave me with the feeling that Erick’s Journey is only just a little way across the surface and could go deeper, much deeper.

At times the story made me smile, other times I laughed out loud and there was one defining moment when my blood chilled and the story took a much darker twist than I had expected.

I warmed to the characters, there were several I wanted to learn more about and I was a little disappointed when that did not happen.

I would like to have seen more action rather than telling in places.  Having said that, I have to admit that one of the highlights of this story is the amount of detail the author imparts about the world, its races and their society.

Erick’s Journey is well worth the ride. If you decide to take it, I recommend that you skip the blurb which I think gives away a little more than it should.
