This is a solid, well written adventure story about a boy called Nate with some unique features, which at the beginning of the story he spends most of his time trying to hide so as not to stand out too much at high school. He can’t help it though – not only does he look not quite like your typical human, he has hypersensitive senses, enhanced reflexes, abnormal strength, and his eyes glow in the dark.
His cover is blown, however, when an extraordinary newsitem is announced – there’s other superhumans out there and they’re tired of hiding and being experimented on and they’re not going to take it anymore! This is now the Sovereign Era, and by the way, this is happening during the 1980′s. Not the 1980′s you remember, but don’t worry, the funky fashions, gelled hair, and punk rock is all there.
So maybe figuring it is their last chance, immediately some sinister scientists become VERY interested in Nate, and in a surprise twist, another schoolmate too . . . Adults can’t or won’t protect them, so soon Nate and his friends are on the run,and the twists and danger keep coming!
Geeky Nate manages to attract the loyal affections of a very cool and confident young lady, perhaps a bit of male wish fulfillment, but it brings in a strong female character.
The theme – kid with special powers persecuted by society – is not all that unique, but if this premise interests you : here is a professionally written and presented, coherant short novel that makes for an entertaining reading experience with the added fun of the 80′s cultural blast from the past. Even better, you can listen to an podcast nicely narrated by the author, with music and bonus stuff at the end. To sum it up, solid adventure story, with some nice extras.
