The Bastard Cadre by Lee Carlon

Defy the Gods!

The Bastard Cadre is a futuristic epic fantasy story, featuring a host of science fiction and fantasy villains, anti-heroes, and heroines.

The story is set in Newterra, which is populated by shape-shifters and sorcerers, cyborgs and gods. Dragons fly above empty wastelands and cities of technological splendor. Gods’ avatars fight holy wars that have all but cleansed the land of the living. The story’s primary protagonist is Avril Ethanson, a young man who was raised in the wastelands salvaging technology from abandoned cities. Avril has no interest in the gods or their chosen and their wars, but early in the story he discovers the choice to remain neutral has been denied him and he is drawn into a conflict that will define him and a scattered cadre of bondsmen he was bound to in the hour of his birth.

Sep 15, 2016: Disclaimers: I don’t normally read post-apoc to begin with and this was part of a review swap so I did. I promise, there’s no bias, but if there was they’d probably cancel each other out.

The early parts aren’t that good, with a lot of slow development, some purple prose, and really confusing action scenes in desperate need of a cleanup. I suspect much of that was the author finding his voice for the story, because it gets better and stays [more . . .]

I had trouble keeping up with this Cadre

By Wildbow, author of Ward

Aug 9, 2015: A quick set of observations, after reading the first few chapters. The Bastard Cadre is a clean cyberpunk work with elements of the dystopian postapocalyptic. The site is stark in design, which works remarkably well considering the recent ‘cleansing’ that was brought to the world. I caught on to that and liked the artistic touch, as it suggests a world that doesn’t live under the shadow of the oppressors, the new gods, but under the luminescent glare of them.

Post Apocalyptic Cyberpunk with Alien Gods–and Dragons!

By Team Contract, member

Aug 8, 2016: I’m surprised that this series doesn’t have more positive reviews. Bastard Cadre has some of the best writing I have found on WFG to date. Although perhaps I might be a bit biased toward it, since I’m a cyberpunk fan and this serial certainly fits the bill.

The Bastard Cadre takes place in a distant future (or perhaps alternate universe) where god like beings took over the planet. They set a new order, making immortal champions and all kinds of new [more . . .]
