I’ve been an avid reader since I was about 5 years old when a teacher shoved an enthralling tale about a man and his donkey (yes, I even remember the heavy-handed illustrations) into my hands to stop me from running into the bushes at quiet time. I discovered I wanted to be a writer when at the age of seven I wrote a story about an alien robot landing in my back garden. We didn’t have a TV then as they were still relatively new in South Africa so making up stories felt as natural as slurping spaghetti. The biggest bit of fiction was the ‘back garden’ because we lived on the third floor in a large block of flats. Alien robots were far more likely.

My parents then made the mistake of giving me some ‘good schooling’. Creative pursuits were for those who could afford to while away their days in honey-drizzled ennui; not for the likes of me. Academia warred with my angst-riddled poetic voice through my teen years until I finally put down my pen and paintbrush and succumbed to a more . . . corporate, black-and-white life.

Recently I decided I could gosh-darn well have the whole cake. And eat it. It’s still a sticky affair but one day I’ll even have the recipe.

I will read just about any genre of fiction although my favourite has always been fantasy, hence my first attempt at fiction since high school homework has magic of the dragon kind. This however has never deterred me from enjoying a well-told yarn in any other genre – from chick-lit and YA to horror and sci-fi, history and romance to mystery and satire. Bring it on!

I now juggle my cake, virtual pen, kids and all the attendant peripherals while I weave between incidental humans in the real world. My lack of spider-sense and GPRS makes certain that accidents are a way of life. Luckily I’ve watched reality TV so I’m a qualified doctor, otherwise I’d be the reason medical aids need to bloat their fees and advertising budgets.

The web-lit world is a truly spectacular place to be and I hope to be an active part of it for many years to come.
