Editor’s First Impression

By Palladian, editor, author of Super

Jul 4, 2013: This is a collection of stand-alone short stories, many of which have fantasy/horror elements. The other thing they have a lot of is angst, fear, longing, and regret. It’s not my usual read, but the author has a true gift for creating stories and moments that bring these things out, and then holding them up to the light like fine blown glass.

He has a talent for creating a world and telling a story succinctly, so that by the end I always felt I had a strong impression of the characters, as well as the particular mix of feelings he was going for. Only one of the stories (My Dead Boyfriend) seemed to be a bit long to me, but according to the author’s notes, this is an earlier piece of work (from 2012) that he republished on his site, and it’s exciting to see the growth of his writing skills from then to now. I did notice the occasional typo (more in the older story than I the newer ones), but I didn’t find them so frequently that they interfered with my reading enjoyment.

At any rate, I’d definitely recommend this author’s stories to anyone who likes fantasy/horror with a heaping side of heartbreak with it, because this author has a talent for delivering just that.
