The writing in the first chapter is solid.  A sixteen-year-old girl hears a noise in her house when she’s alone and waits for the big, hairy monster with a baseball bat.

What I noticed first is the prose. It’s flippant and conversational, and whether this reflects the narrator’s personality is yet to be seen.

The first chapter begins with a girl at home alone while a monster climbs up the stairs. At first I thought the conversational prose undermined the weight of what is supposed to be a tense scene. Then I quickly realized I was wrong. This story is actually quite humorous and doesn’t take itself too seriously, like so much urban fantasy out there. The prose and the story work together to make something that’s actually pretty funny. If it was written any differently it wouldn’t work.

Sometimes the descriptions are a little choppy, especially in the first part of the chapter (a symptom I’ve noticed of first chapters), but once the author settles in I found a couple of the phrasings compelling, like “his reward was a whole new symphony of pain sizzling its way through his muscles.” The author has a knack for writing, that’s for certain, and I hope this series follows through on its promise in ensuing chapters.

Overall: Worth a read definitely. The author does a brilliant job of showing and not telling and has noticeable skill in writing clear, readable prose. Solid work.
