An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom by MeiLin Miranda

Magic, Intrigue, Sex

Now Playing: Book One, “Lovers and Beloveds”:

Eighteen-year-old Prince Temmin has led a childhood as close to normal as possible, far from the capital. When he comes of age and joins his father King Harsin, he’s completely unprepared for the politics, assassins and sexual intrigues at court.

Temmin is even more unprepared when he discovers there is magic in the world, all in the hands of his father’s immortal advisor Teacher. Teacher becomes his tutor, and Temmin discovers his lessons are contained in a magic book. When Teacher reads to him, Temmin experiences everything the story’s characters do, and he’s forced to confront serious mistakes in the kingdom’s—and his own—past.

His present is just as complicated. He’s falling for beautiful twins—brother and sister—who are the human hosts of the Gods of love and desire called the Lovers. Being with them is more than sex; it’s a religious calling, and the Lovers have spoken clearly to him. But an ancient prophecy says that if Temmin heeds Their call it may spell the end of the monarchy, and his father King Harsin fights him every step of the way.

Temmin must choose: Serve the Lovers and lose his father—and possibly the kingdom—or serve King Harsin and risk the wrath of the Gods.

Set in a Victorianesque world of magic, sexuality, political intrigue and military conquest, “Lovers and Beloveds” is the first book in the series “An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom.”

Note: An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom contains pervasive graphic sexual content; also, some graphic violence and harsh language.

An Intimate History Indeed

Editor: Sonja Nitschke

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom has everything that every good fantasy story needs:  magic,  prophecies, mysterious—apparently immortal – mentors and curses just to mention a few.  But unlike most fantasy stories, there is no apparent Quest – it is simply the history of the Kingdom.  Not the dull sort of history in text books that are nothing but dates and other unmemorable facts, but the story of the people who shaped the course of a Kingdom.

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is also a story about the “current” rulers of the realm, focusing mostly on Prince Temmin with forays into the point of views of some of the secondary characters.

These two “histories” intertwine and complement each other.

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is also a fantasy with “all the good parts left in.”  The sex does not detract from the narrative, but only adds to it.  A word of warning:  some of the sex is non-consensual, but it is never graphic.

As a whole, An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is a good story about love, honor, loyalty, and growing up, but it starts a little on the slow side.  I found it difficult to relate to Prince Temmin, finding that the “history” portions of the story were more interesting.  Even though An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is well into its second volume, I am still uninterested in the prince’s character and I can only hope that as the story progresses that he will grow more as a character.

I would also like to mention that Meilin Miranda has done an excellent job constructing the site – it is easy to navigate and professional.

Story and sex. What more can you ask for?

I’ve been following this story nearly from the beginning and it’s only gotten better the more Mei has written.  Considering this is her self-professed "first attempt at fiction," I’m going to have to give her a standing ovation.  She certainly puts other, more seasoned, writers to shame in this regard.

Appreciation for new version

Editor: Fiona Gregory

I give the new version of AIHotGK my stamp of approval! While I can’t remember the original well enough to evaluate how much the new narrative diverges, I’m definitely finding it a tighter, more focused read this time around. The multidimensional characters and lush setting come alive, make me smile, hold my sympathy and catch at my imagination. And did [more . . .]

Why I Love "An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom"

Anyone who is not up to date with this story is missing out on a sensual, light-hearted trip that foreshadows great excitement and upheaval in the kingdom’s future and in Temmin’s eventual ascendancy as King.  Also Temmin has finally lost his virginity, and what a way to do so!  It was an exceptionally beautiful chapter.

MeiLin Miranda is a good writer, and extremely creative.  Not only does she have a lively imagination, she also comes up with impressive ways to involve her audience, and designed a great website.  Individual chapters of her ongoing story can be humorous, erotic, thrilling and intriguing.  Her description of clothing and scenery is elegant and evocative.
